What is MAPA?

Mendocino Area Parks Association (MAPA) is a non-profit cooperating association formed to benefit the State Parks in the Mendocino District. Due to state budget cuts, MAPA is collaborating with Parks, businesses, non-profits, citizens and other park-lovers to keep open our parks slated for closure. Donations and Volunteers are crucial for our parks.

Supported by volunteers, MAPA's goals include providing top-quality educational activities, interpretive programs and exhibits in our local state parks. MAPA also assists with the Visitor Centers in six State Parks, publishes and sells publications on local natural and cultural history, and consistently raises money to "keep things local" and improve the park experiences for visitors, local residents, and the abundant flora and fauna that thrive along the magnificent Mendocino Coast.

MAPA helps to preserve our parklands and cultural history through:

  • Collaborating to help keep open ALL of our parks
  • MAPA Facts:

  • MAPA’s Interpretive programs reach more than 5000 school children and adults each year

  • MAPA’s visitor center and museums impact over 1/2 million people each year.  Stop by a Visitor Center next time you’re in one of our State Parks.
  • Park Interpreters (Experts who interpret the language of nature to humans)
  • Nature Programs, Campfire programs and Jr. Rangers
  • School Nature programs and Field Trips
  • Greenwood/Elk Visitor Center - Logging History
  • Ford House State Park Visitor Center, Mendocino Headlands State Park/ Logging History
  • Hendy Woods State Park Visitor Center - Nature Exhibits
  • MacKerricher State Park Visitor Center - Nature Exhibits
  • Van Damme State Park Visitor Center - Underwater-scene Diorama
  • Pine Grove
  • Gray Whale Reconstructed Skeleton Exhibit, MacKerricher State Park
  • Volunteer Docent Councils at various District State Parks
  • Permanent and seasonal exhibits at District State Parks
  • Educational publications, materials and equipment.
