| | | | | | | | | Art Lovers Walked on the Wild Side | | | Almost 200 people answered the Call of the Wild at Mendocino Area Park Association’s (MAPA’s) Walk on the Wild Side Auction and Banquet, Saturday, April 19 at Pentecost Hall in Fort Bragg.
Attendees were amazed by the transformation of the historic hall with artwork and plants, thanks to many artists, plant nurseries, volunteers and Fort Bragg Rent-All. Flowering Clematis, Jasmine and Rhododendrons perfumed the air. Large bonsai, conifers, maples and cherry trees, and dozens of smaller decorative plants and grasses, added height, dimension and texture, a lush backdrop for the juried art based on the CA State Parks in Mendocino County.
Strains of live chamber music mingled with soft conversation and the tinkling of wine glasses. Dressed in full Scottish regalia, Stan Anderson, MAPA Board chairman, cut a handsome figure as he greeted guests entering the dining hall who were eager to feast on the sumptuous banquet prepared by thirteen of our famous chefs, and sample our Mendocino County wines and beer - art in edible and liquid form. A gossamer screen of the Van Damme Fern Canyon trail served as entryway to the buffet. Videographer, Bruce Blosser, projected videos of park views onto fabric-covered walls in the ‘picnic area’, scenes of ocean waves, rivers, grasslands and woodlands, a harmonizing visual of being in the parks.
David Linkhart, Arts for the Parks Chairperson, announced the art winners, and after a humorous skit by Steve Jordan, assisted Kelly Renzi, auctioneer with the live auction. | | | | Art created by the cash grand prize winners, ribbon winners and other selected artists will tour various galleries throughout Mendocino County. In May, the art is available for purchasing and viewing in Fort Bragg at Prentice Gallery, Mendocino Coast Photographers Guild and Edgewater Gallery. The galleries in Mendocino are the Mendocino Art Center and Ravens/Stanford Inn. The Traveling Gallery monthly schedule may be picked up at the participating galleries, the Ford House in Mendocino, or from the MAPA website. In 2007, Linkhart proposed the art event as a fundraiser for MAPA. His one idea grew until the contest involved hundreds of artists, chefs, volunteers and area citizens who worked in unity to benefit MAPA’s educational programs for school children and visitors in our local state parks. “California’s State Budget reductions means MAPA’s educational mission is more important to our community than ever,” says Carolyne Cathey, MAPA Executive Director. “Our goal is to encourage appreciation, understanding and protection of our irreplaceable parklands, which results in a richer, healthier ‘home’ for all of us.” MAPA invites interested individuals and businesses to join the MAPA team as a member, donor or volunteer.
