Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area

The South Fork Eel is twisty but boatable much of the year. It fills the park with alluvial benches (flood-borne soils) on inside turns, shoreless cliffs on outside turns, rapids, deep swimmable pools, and scattered sandy beaches.


Jug Handle State Natural Reserve

Non-motorized and motorized boating allowed.


Mackerricher State park

Non-motorized boats are allowed on Lake Cleone.


Mendocino Headlands State Park

Canoe and kayak rentals and tours to explore up Big River are offered through Catch a Canoe, 1 South Big River Road, Mendocino. Open daily 9-5, or call (707) 937-0273. There is a boat ramp on the north side of Big River where people can put in their own boats.

The protected cove provides a nice spot to boat from, but be conscious of currents.


Navarro river redwoods state park

In winter and spring, kayakers and canoeists enjoy the peace and quiet of the river and ocean.


russian gulch state park

Canoes and kayaks can carry you into the ocean when the cove entry point is calm.


van damme state park

Van Damme Beach is popular with kayakers. In the summer, kayak tours exploring the tide pools and sea caves nearby are offered through a concessionaire at the Van Damme Beach parking lot. Call (707) 813-7117 or visit www.kayakmendocino.com.


Westport-Union Landing State Beach

Boating is allowed.
